today’s get-up 19jul08

by queengilda on July 19, 2008

today was a special day. if you’ve been following freebird, you’ll know that i am currently working part-time in the back office at patricia field’s shop. my work is basically to help out with the web orders, and also i work closely with the buyers (erm, to get merchandise to stock the shop!). that is what i’ve been doing the past couple of months. however, today, my manager asked me to help out in the store for a few hours in the evening.

help out. in the store. like the store-store. on the floor.

don’t get me wrong, i didn’t dread any of that. my dream in life isn’t to be a salesgirl, but my little secret is that i really do love it. the thing is, i grew up helping out in my parents’ shop. even when i was still quite a kid, i would go down and help sell stuff. when i was a teenager, i worked there during the school holidays to get some extra pocket money. i tend to get a little shy when meeting people for the first time, and i’m really bad at small talk and sometimes don’t know what to say. (so awkward. i am. very.)

but because i’ve worked in retail basically since i was a kid, i really love it. and because i sort of grew up doing that in my parent’s shop, to me, retail = my own business. when i later worked in a nail salon (please. nothing like the god-awful nail salons that are everywhere in new york.) for a short 3-month stint, i really learnt the importance of customer service. i was friends with all my clients, and got to know some of them really very well. i knew everything about their family, their job, their relationships, etc. i got to know them, and they, me. and they would come back again and again.

i believe it is because i make it a point to make their experience at my shop (even if it wasn’t mine) an enjoyable, memorable one.

one of my clients became such a good friend, i got to know her entire family and she later offered me a job as her p.a.! i went to work for her for 9 months before i left for tokyo, and it was one of my best work experiences. we’re still great friends to this day and my sister is now also friends with her whole family!

so. back to the story. even though i only worked on the floor for 5 hours today, i was excited about it. i mean, it’s been a while since i’ve done some sales job, but to me, it was like getting back to basics. i believe every customer is important, even if the sale is small. a happy customer will keep coming back, and that “small” will grow pretty big. trust me on that one. my parents also taught me to be my own boss. and if i’m not yet at that kind of level, then treat the place i’m working at, as my own. personally, it is this way of thinking i have that has helped me in all my work experiences, because my bosses trust me enough to know i will do a good job.

besides, patricia field has the best kind of clothes in new york. new york fashion is not what i thought it would be. people here really don’t dress up that much. yes, you do get the classy chic people. but the majority of the population is just a big blah. if you’re like me, you probably thought that new york was a pretty darn stylish place.

eh— wrong. sex and the city gave you the wrong impression. it sure gave me one. when i first came here, i was shocked. i thought, “where were all the beautiful people!?” the reason why new york looked as good as it did in sex and the city, is because of patricia field. you can’t argue against that. it’s a fact.

so it was great just working on the floor and helping out whichever customer i could. the kind of shopping experience you get in the store, the kind of stuff we actually have, is like no other in new york city. one lady picked up the leather finger tip gloves we have, and asked, “why do you guys make these gloves? why just 4 fingers? does it serve a purpose?”

i said, “its purpose is to be fabulous!! it doesn’t need any other reason! i bought one before i started working here and trust me it was worth every penny.”

i know i sound lame, but personally, i hope that customers, especially the ones i served, leave the shop feeling happy and satisfied!

did that last sentence sound like i was prostituting? hahaha.

my dream is to one day have my own little store, stocked with things that i love and things that i’ve designed myself. and i want to be there and sell my own things to my customers! personal service! that’s my ideal future.

anyway, some of you might know that i recently had the chance to meet loulou, the girl behind loulou loves you! she makes the cutest satin knickers and all kinds of bows. i make bows myself too, but loulou’s are big and too cute.

i know i have been posting too many outfit photos recently. i know that because i have received a couple of hate mail. haha! (they were too funny and some people have nothing better to do. i put myself out there and i’ve been honest about everything, so if you don’t like my blog, you can leave. but more on that another day!)

however, this bow was so cute and i got so many compliments on it, i couldn’t not put up a picture. thank you loulou! i wish i wasn’t so broke when i met you, or i would have bought more!

gingham bow by louloulovesyou
zamiang! tshirt by jun takahashi (undercover) for hysteric mini
the aristocats‘ marie purse from tokyo disney
turquoise crinoline
navy tights
studded boots by junya watanabe
neon pink watch by toy watch

the first thing my roommate said when i came home today was, “*gasp*! you walked around town like that?”

hahahahahahaha. i know. i’m an asian circus.

ps: oh man, i never realized my window was so disgustingly dirty! how did all those fingerprints get there? eek!!

AH! I LOVE it… SO jealous (ok, laying off the caps, promise)… Thats so wonderful that you met LouLou recently, she is too gorgeous & I adore her satin knickers. I was looking to buy that bow but its out of stock atm on LouLou’s site (I’m blaiming you, missy :P ). No but really, it looks amazing on you, so stylish. I love the rest of your get up, the tulle like skirt (can’t tell if it is or is not tulle?) & tshirt combo with opaques. Another fab look Gilda!

Don’t listen to the hate mail – I love seeing your outfit photos! You are always so unique and interesting.

3 V July 20, 2008 at 4:53 am

hehe I can so relate! As a kid, I would always help in my mom’s shop, I would secretly wish to be a shop assistant when I grow up ih! :-P

I love what you’re wearing! I made a huge bow too the other day with a scarf, I just wish I had your confidence to actually wear it outside though!

4 tash July 20, 2008 at 5:41 am

you are too cool for school!
i wish i could pull off that look without looking like a potato – but you look stunning and awesome at the same time…
a total fashion icon in the making

5 Elle July 20, 2008 at 5:48 am

ignoooooore the hate mail! the outfit photos are one big important part of this blog! you inspire me more and more to buy clothes that normally I would never consider buying. you inspire me to change! (in the good way I hope!)
is it hard to get an internship in a store like that? or, how about if you don’t have any background in the fashion industry? just wondering since you make it sound SO FREAKING EXCITING! hehehe

take care and have fun!

6 Sheena July 20, 2008 at 7:22 am

I love the playfulness you bring to your outfits Gilda. They’re always chic yet have a fantastic sense of humour. Tres cool.

7 Laura July 20, 2008 at 7:32 am

I LOVE BOWSSSSS

When i get some more $$$ I’m heading over to the fabric store so i can make some! They are ridiculously hard to find! and when you do find them, they’re completely wrong. I remember the days when dollar stores had loads of them. not anymore.

anyhow, I never understand hate mail, unless you’ve said something controversial on your blog, it just makes zero sense!

My blog is so new, I haven’t gotten any yet…so we’ll see!

8 sushi July 20, 2008 at 8:54 am

GILDA!!! Tokyo has a new shop and you would so love it! I thought of you as soon as I walked in. It is on Spain Zakka in Shibuya, close to the top near the crepe shop. It is called Girl’s Doors and it is paradise!! So you!

Tokyo is calling you! ;)

I took some pics and will post them on sushizume soon, I promise!

p.s You look hot, as always!

Aw, I wish I could have that same love of retail! I’ve worked at two such places (one for clothes, one for electronics) and I just couldn’t enjoy it. I didn’t like the managers constantly watching like a hawk or trying to push expensive stuff on people that I knew should probably be spending huge amounts of money on really un-wise purchases. Especially since the clothes store I worked at wasn’t that impressive. D: That’s awesome that you are so passionate about it. I love going to stores with people like you working there :D

10 Allison July 20, 2008 at 2:57 pm

This is neither here nor there – but ARISTOCATS! Having an accessory from that movie ups your coolness factor ;] & Good for you on your love of retail – it sounds like a great environment for you. Combing work plus passion plus fashion!

11 Loulou July 20, 2008 at 4:20 pm

aww yey! so cute, I love you in my bow, you look totally adorable <3. Oh and you literally just wrote out what was running through my mind the whole time in NYC, and also in Paris where I realised that London (although maybe Tokyo?) is really the only fashion forward place in the world, where you can wear anything and noone would ever dream to say anything. My friend Rachel who you met with me at the market has the most amazing wardrobe and all these cool hats and she can’t wear any of them because people give her so much hassle! it’s so sad. Also in Paris people were opening laughing in hysterics at the bows I wore, like pointing at me and stuff! I was like errrrr get with some style people! And everyone stops me in nyc as they cant believe they are seeing a girl with red hair. SHOCK HORROR!

phew.

Gilda, I can’t believe that anyone would actually send you hate mail – how sad! Your outfit photos are absolutely gorgeous, and I really look forward to them each time I come here – you are so creative and adorable it hurts! Keep up the good work, girl xoxo

13 Young Werther July 21, 2008 at 1:43 am

Love your new site, and glad you’ve found something you enjoy…

Go Girl !!

14 Leanne July 21, 2008 at 4:46 am

i’ve always loved the idea of working in retail too! to have my own shop and sell my own designs or artworks, will be completely amazing!!! or just to have a studio and have people come over to admire my works while i talk about them is a dream come true! unfortunately med hasn’t given me time to do all those things, but i am still dreaming and hope to juggle that somehow, or even have my artworks in some fancy store which i’ll probably drop by everyday to see. hehe. i haven’t had a retail job before .my first job was an administrative job, so a lot of photocopying, reception and talking to clients, but the boss was kind of dodgey, being the youngest she really took advantage of my poor pay. now i’m a tutor… i like teaching but i really crave for retail or hospitality. my uni timetable is shocking to get a job, but i hope by the end of the year i can be some funky waitress at a cafe or a mini salesgirl at a very stylish clothes store… tehee.

if you said “its purpose is to be fabulous!!” i would’ve smiled. i love the enthusiam of SA’s, when they do talk to me =_=” i can’t believe people are sending you hatemail.. doesn’t make sense.

btw, thanks for the encouragement to go my own way and not to always follow others. :)

15 Guirec July 21, 2008 at 11:01 am

Great look !

Thank u for the link and the comment ! Could u write my like this : Once upon a honeymoon.

Thank u so much ! See u !

16 Lesley Denford July 21, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Haha, you and your outfit are absolutely adorable! <3

17 fashionherald July 21, 2008 at 2:29 pm

no, keep posting outfits, love to see the fun stuff you wear! And you’re so right about NYC and SATC.
that bow is darling on you.

18 Raiment Urbane July 21, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I love that skirt!…I hope your dream of having a little store comes true. I know I’d love to shop there!, you’re so fab!.

Oh and you’re right about sex and the city, I believe people shouldn’t base their knowledge on tv shows!, tv shows are always meant to be more fabulous!. You don’t see school girls dressing as they dress in gossip girl (even though that would be AWESOME ahah)

19 happydead July 21, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Good site, i like it… gl hf

20 Annie Spandex July 21, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Too many outfits? More like not enough! Those boots are so awesome, by the way.
And you’re totally right about Project Runway–that had been bugging me too. They sent the wrong person home! If only he’d said the outift was supposed to be avant-garde (as opposed to “for a girl out on the town”), would that have made a difference? I don’t know, but I blame the producers. I think they didn’t get it. I’d hope the judges know better! (Shhh, just let me hang on to that hope..!) hehe

21 Lady Julianne le Fay July 21, 2008 at 8:10 pm

I have a similar dream of owning a shop filled with things I’ve picked out and maybe the odd thing I’ve made myself (being no great craftslady). I’ve never really worked in a shop properly but I can get really excited thinking about all the things I’d sell and the interior design!

I’ve heard that about New York – I always thought it was really fashion forward because of TV and its fashion week being more prestigious than London’s but then one of my lecturers last year (a sociologist/cultural theorist who has written about fashion culture) said there is no fashion in America really, there is some in New York but it’s not like London, the US just doesn’t have the massive national obsession with fashion like in the UK . I thought that was kind of just rude of her to say but then I started looking at NYC street style blogs and discovered they bored me and I actually agreed! Too elegant and neutral-coloured, not crazy enough!

22 Aja July 22, 2008 at 2:15 am

You sound like an awesome salesgirl. Also known as the type I watch out for :) If I were still in New York, I could see myself spending at least half an hour chatting with you and leaving short of $100 or more. But it’s great to hear someone talk so excitedly about what they do. It’s actually awesome.

PS – I always knew Patricia Field was the brains behind revamping the image of NYC. I saw her at Century 21 years ago. My sister and I both did a double glance and continued combing the racks for Vivienne Westwood.

23 SolShine7 July 22, 2008 at 2:26 am

Cool blog! The banner design is really creative.

24 whimsical delights July 22, 2008 at 4:05 am

everytime i read your blog, i always leave with a tremendous jealous sigh. you lucky lucky girl.

and i couldn’t but not tag you. you’ve been tagged.

25 gilda July 22, 2008 at 5:00 am

hello cupcakes!!

thank you all so much for your lovely comments. i have SO much i really do want to say and i want to reply to each of you, but i’d just had 3 long days of work, and it was one of my best friend’s tony’s birthday tonight.

to top it all off, one of my cousins is here in new york all the way from land of top of the faraway tree!! (meaning, singapore)

so i’m spending some time with her! however, blog entries are being written and i have a lot to say about some of your comments, which i will do tomorrow!! or today, to be specific. it’s 4:55am now as i glance at my clock, and i’d just gotten home. i’m tired and after 7 cocktails, i’m amazingly, not very high. :) in fact i’m so energetic, but if i want to last the whole of tomorrow, i’ve decided i should be a good little girl and go to bed. bed, glorious bed!

so good night my lovelies! sweet dreams!

i’ll dream of my darling takuya and i hope you’re dreaming of blue meadows and pink dragonflies.

with love, glitter balloons, and an “oh my god i can’t believe it’s a cosmopolitan!”,
<3 gilda

26 Couture Carrie July 22, 2008 at 1:06 pm

You will absolutely have your own store someday – I just know it!!!

27 Mynrose July 22, 2008 at 10:22 pm

hey gilda, been reading your blog for maybe around a few weeks now. Interesting~~~ Especially the part about Japan and how they won’t cut your phone bill or something. lol. And hello neighbour lol, I’m from Malaysia and basically staying in NZ atm. And Omg I love your outfit photos. Take more take more :p Hehe. You are so damn lucky girl~ Really proud to be able to see you doing so well in NY. I admit, on your post on customer service, customers really are important to any business. High five for that. Keep on taking those photoshoots. Its fun! And hope you have fun with your cousin too! :) C ya

<3 maz.

28 Ayesha July 23, 2008 at 8:59 am

You have such a positive outlook on being a salesperson in retail, I need to take some tips, lol. I’ve never liked working in it really.

That bow on top of your head is so freaking cute!!

And yeah, NYC has a little bit of style, but definitely not like SATC portrayed it. Most people just couldn’t care less.

29 Beka July 23, 2008 at 10:35 am

First off, I love your outfit more than you know. Second, the fact that you work in Patricia Fields is so awesome. Congrats to you!

30 The Sister July 24, 2008 at 6:09 pm

OMG! YouboughtaTOYWATCHandyoudidn’ttellme!!!

31 gilda July 26, 2008 at 1:14 am

+katie+
i loved loulou’s red hair! :) and i’m sure those bows didn’t sell out because of me! haha. i’m such a nobody! and yes that is a silk tulle crinoline.

+bridey+
thank you bridey! yes i kinda laughed more at the hate mail than let it affect me! simply because i couldn’t believe someone would take all that time to tell me they didn’t like me. woohoo.

+v+
i really do want to have my own shop in the future, just so i can work in it! haha. you should just put aside any concerns you might have of people staring, and just wear it!

+tash+
oh you flatter me too much. fashion icon! hahaha my secret is that i actually look like a stuffed dumpling but i try to cover my flaws!

+elle+
oh honey you make me proud. hahaha. well don’t buy clothes that you don’t feel comfortable in!! but certainly, it’s great if you can slowly open up to more possibilities and options! i would be so happy! :) as for my internship, i was actually recommended for the job by my hair stylist! so she kinda got me in, but if you were to go through the normal route, i think it depends on your character, personality, sense of style (if it fits the shop), and willingness to work hard and learn! i don’t think a fashion background actually matters that much. the job goes to the best person suitable!

+sheena+
oh thank you! i feel like sometimes i should act my age but i know it’s really not that appropriate for my personality. i love that you said my outfits are playful. yayyy!!! thank you!

+laura+
nice bows really are hard to find!! take a look at loulou’s site!! and if you’re handy with the sewing machine or needles and thread, i guess you could do one yourself! :)

32 gilda July 26, 2008 at 2:15 am

+sushizume+
first of all, one of my bosses is called sushi and when i saw your comment for a split moment i thought it was him and my heart skipped a beat. hahaha. ohh gosh spain zakka! how i long to be there. the crepe shop! the tiniest little thing i’ve ever seen. i miss is so! i want to go to tokyo!! i can hear you calling me, tokyo!! ahhh!

+ameya+
oh i hate sales people who push items on people too! especially when it doesn’t suit them. it’s no wonder you hated it!

+allison+
hahahahahahah. YES i love disney and aristocats is just sooo cute. those of you who follow me on twitter would know i just rewatched alice in wonderland late last night! ohhh to be a child again! :)

+loulou+
oh and i’m so glad i bought it from you even though i was so broke at that time! haha. i loved your red hair. some new yorkers can be so stupid and i’ve never been to paris but i’ve heard how snobbish and rude they can be!! shocking. i don’t know how they would react to my dressing. i can only imagine it must be super cool in london. and tokyo is definitely my fashion capitol of the world. how dare those parisians point at you! how terribly rude! next time, bite their fingers!

+miss corrine+
i’m sorry it hurts but thank you so much hee hee! <3

+young werther+
heyyyy how have you been??? yes i am really enjoying myself although new york gets lonely sometimes! but i’m so glad that i’ve chosen my friends well!

+leanne+
you give tuition? wow. i did that for a little while and the money is good but it was really really hard to me. a lot of my parents’ doctor friends who are now kinda retiring, are all doing solo shows showing their artwork!!! what is it with doctors and art? i think you guys must be good with your hands, that’s why. haha. they’re doing it now in their 50s, so well, it’s never too late, and you’re still young! :) i think waitressing is hard too because trays are heavy. haha. but i can totally see you in some super cool store! :)

+guirec+
i sure can, honey!! i’ve been so busy this week but yes those links will go up soon!!

+lesley+
haha thank you! i can’t wait to see you!

+fashionherald+
isn’t it a little shocking about new york? well i was shocked, at least!

+raiment urbane+
hahaha the only school girls i know who dress that sexy in plaid are porn stars, ok. :) i’ve never seen girls in the upper east side looking that great! rich, yes, but great, no!

+happydead+
why thank you!

+annie spandex+
thanks. don’t even get me started on junya! i love him. YES i think that jerri guy made a mistake saying it was for a girl out on a town. but at least he worked on his outfit man. that stella person took 5 minutes on hers!! i mean, even on the 2nd episode, how many times did she say she has no idea what she’s doing?? obviously not a designer.

+lady julianne+
oh my god interior design! of a shop!! that’s so important right?? i love the interior of pat field’s shop. it’s so darn amazing. i totally agree with your professor. i mean, yeah there are elegant people but when you walk on the streets, it’s hard to actually find people i do double-takes at. and i’m not talking about cute guys because i’ve done a lot of double-takes at cute guys in tokyo but not here. hahahaha. i’ll be lucky if i do a double-take at someone’s outfit once a day. i can’t imagine being a street style blogger here. i would love to, seriously, but then i can just imagine it’s tough.

+aja+
ahahahahahah oh i’ll totally make my commission off you then! hehe!! and gasp! do you love vivienne westwood too? she’s the queen of queens!!

+solshine7+
thanks! those are my drawings :D

+whimsical delight+
oh thank you you’re so sweet. i am starting to believe that you can create your own luck though. :)

+couture carrie+
ohhhhhh thank youuuu!!! xox! i want one so bad! but i’ll be patient!!

+mynrose+
thanks for reading and i’m glad you left a comment! what are you doing in new zealand? i have to check out your blog later. my roommate is malaysian too! such coincidences! i’m craving malay curries and rendangs now! haha. and YES those crazy japanese phone and utilities companies! really made me mad. :) i can’t believe you read those posts from so long ago but that made me really happy. hahah could you sense my exasperation!

+ayesha+
actually most people here couldn’t care less about anything at all! it’s a little irritating. so i choose to surround myself only with people who have dreams and ambition! i guess some people just can’t work retail. i would hate it too, especially if some customers were annoying :) i’m sure you’re good at many other things!

+beka+
haha! first of all, thank you, and second of all, i was really lucky!

+the sister+
i did i did!! i told you! i told you they came up with a new collection and i want one so bad! so… i went and bought it!

33 The Sister August 4, 2008 at 9:43 pm

You didn’t You didn’t !! You told me they came up with a new collection and you want one so bad FULL-STOP! How could you! I want one too… *sobs*
