my first foray into new york fashion week, and honestly, wow, i don’t know how all the magazine editors and bloggers do it.
i guess it’s completely possible if this is your full-time job. but if you are a full-time student like me, doing fashion design, and also working on your own collection plus doing a little freelance AND on top of that trying to maintain a blog, it is not an easy task.
although i managed to get quite a few invites to the shows this season, i had to pass on a lot of them because they all clashed with my classes.
if there was one thing i learnt this weekend, was that fashion week is for people who think skipping through the tents is fun and something to brag about. for me, i just want to see the clothes and the set-up of the show. nothing else really matters, does it? it seems really stupid to go through all that trouble, and then to hear comments like, “oh my god, that dress is so cute. i die.” or “oh my god look at those heels.”
really? is that all you know about fashion? if it is, you don’t deserve to be here. let the real fashion people come in the doors please, people who can comment about how the shows are following certain trends, how shoulder shapes are, how arm holes are tighter or not, how sleeves are getting wider, how sequins are still so now, how every designer seems to be going asymmetrical.
i want proper show reports thank you, not a cut-and-paste from style.com. i don’t give a damn about which celebrity is in the front row. i don’t care if anna wintour is wearing her sunglasses or not. i just want to experience the clothing and feel the privilege of witnessing the designer and his team’s blood and tears, and all the time they had spent in putting the collection together. maybe i’m saying this so strongly because i am a designer myself, and so many people don’t understand the amount of work that goes into producing a collection.
i also learnt that i wanted to work a little harder on this lil ol’ blog o’ mine, if only i could get better press credentials just so i can meet amazing people like gareth. or yohji. or vivienne westwood. or bernhard willhelm. or, dare i say it, rei, junya and tao.
one day, one day.
i don’t want to intrude on them, i don’t want to ask the same old questions, i don’t want to be in their space. i just want to see how they are in person, whether they will smile at fans, whether they will be snooty, whether they seemed intellectual, whether they had bad breathe, whether they wash their hair every day. you know, that sort of thing. haha! anything that will tell me what sort of person they are.
i want to know, because knowing that will tell me a little something extra about them as a designer, and in turn, allow me to appreciate their art form even more.
extra! extra! read all about it!

I totally agree with you. And watching/reading all of the write ups on NYFW, it makes me wonder how people do it and don’t come out seriously effed up from lack of sleep/running around in heels for six days. I’m pretty sure that meeting Vivienne Westwood would be one of the very few occasions that could render me nonverbal!
Also, as someone who has NOT seen the Rachel Zoe Project, can I just say that “I die” is getting juuuuust a little overused? I don’t care how cool someone is, I don’t need to hear their catch phrase every ten minutes…

this is a really interesting perspective – i’ve never been to any fashion weeks before, but of course I have always wanted to – but only to be able to see what all the fuss is about, i’ll admit, and so I suppose that if I were to get to a show, I would probably be one of the industry-ignorant ladies gawking at the shiny stuff, big hair and pretty models.
I agree with you that fashion week should be more about inspiration than bragging rights, yet I’m sure if I was offered tickets I would keep them for myself, despite my lack of knowledge.
bisous xx
I really admire your honesty and realness in all your posts. None of that fashionista/wannabe celeb bullshit. verrrry refreshing. parsons really needs to use their networking skills & take up on your suggestion of letting real fashion people & students in at the shows. it really is a waste to let someone get in that can only comment “OMG CUTE!!!1!1!!! WANT!” rather then someone who actually knows their stuff.
you’re a really great & passionate designer, i wish you the best in what you do =] please always stay true to yourself and dont change! i’m not a fashion student and i dont know how to tell if a jacket was made shitty or not but i would love to see a show of yours one day!
This was the first “proper” thing I’ve read this morning and frankly I’m amazed. I couldn’t agree more with everything you wrote and you have such a sincere, humble atittude to all of this that I think you really have the potential to succeed in fashion. I was actually reading older posts on your blog just yesterday and noticed that you seem very sensitive — that’s an amazing quality for a designer but don’t let it get in the way in the sense of not doing your best when you’re feeling too down. I’m sure fashion school has already taught you that though.

Interesting post, and a refreshing take on a fashion event that without fail produces bags of identical articles are reporting the same thing in the same tone with the same photos.
That said, quite often, I do find myself going “Oh god look at those heels”. I love them. I love that I would likely die if I wore them.. I just kinda love shoes… so I would want a bit of both worlds…
