so i know that 99.3819274% of fashion bloggers have already blogged about this topic, but i still have to say that i really wanted a lot of things from the comme des garçons for h&m line. to my horror, i had classes that morning when the collection came out, which left me ranting and bitching for a few hours. thankfully, a good friend of mine had no classes that morning, and he went to wait in line outside the stores at 6 in the morning!

i sent him a short list of things to buy for me, with whatever money he had left after his own shopping. he was 5th in line to go in but unfortunately, by the time he could grab some girls’ clothes for me, most of what i wanted was already gone. in fact, i wanted the polka dot bag and frock coat so badly, but my boss from patricia field who went to the press release said that it was gone by then. huh! that sucks!

so my friend got for me the black polka dot scarf, as well as the white shirt with ruffled sleeves. which i am very happy with and eternally grateful for. when my morning class ended at 12, i took a cab to the nearest h&m and there was nothing much left but i managed to get myself a red cardigan, long-sleeve teeshirt and a hat. i know what you’re thinking – they are all full of polka dots! yes, if you haven’t noticed by now, i have a lot of clothes with stripes, plaid and polka dots! i am a walking fashion taboo.

did you guys manage to get anything? show me your loot! and if you managed to get the frock coat, i am going to steal it from you when you are asleep.

by the way, i also went and got my hair done. i had like an inch of dark brown, overgrown roots for the longest time and it was killing me. i wore hats everyday! i had no time to get it touched up, which is another poor excuse for not taking any photos. haha! you want another excuse? i’ve piled on some pounds because of that stupid nutella in my pantry. UGH.

i woke up today with massive stomach aches and could not make it to class. that made me very upset. especially since i stayed up 2 hours later than usual, doing some work for that class today. grrr.

after popping some pills and resting, i felt like my usual self again. so i decided to go cut my hair, since i had the afternoon free.

i felt really shitty about missing class. and i think because i felt shitty, i dressed all in black today. it’s been a while since i’ve been in all black. yes girl, i look like i’m in mourning. you guys do know the mourning dress in fashion history right?

oh, did i mention? i got my hair colored when i went to cut my hair. woohoo! i was intending to colour my hair a turquoise blue… or at least that was the colour that my eyes kept focusing on, when i was looking at the color charts. but after i got my hair bleached out, i kinda liked how it looked. i don’t think i have been this light-coloured for a long time!! the pink streaks on my hair are basically remnants of the purplish-red that i had in my hair for a while, and no bleach was going to remove that. but it bleached and faded to a nice light pink, so ayumi and i decided to just keep it that way, and all we did was to add a toner to bring down the yellow colour! so now i have a sort of green-blue ashy colour with pink ends! wheeee!!

and there you have it! the close up of my hair. remember when i last coloured my hair? it ended up having quite a cool tie-dyed effect, once some of the pink faded. in fact, i liked it so much i refrained from updating my colour for 6 weeks. that sounds like an average length of time to re-colour hair, right? but for someone who is using crazy colours, i think it’s actually equivalent to the lifespan of a parrot.

wait, that was quite a bad metaphor.

so i waited and waited and forced myself to wait some more, until my roots grew longer than an inch and i really couldn’t take it any longer.

many people asked me how my tie-dye hair was achieved, and a few of you emailed to ask me too! so here’s the little secret:

it wasn’t planned, it just happened! ahaha! as i mentioned when i first coloured my monkey hair, we simply bleached out my roots and blended the bleach into my existing purple colour, which gave me yellow roots with reddish ends. on top of the yellow, we added pink, blending that into the red too. so when the colour faded a little, i was left with pink, orange, then red hair.

cool eh? i know! but i give ayumi all the credit. she’s the colour mix master.

alright, alright. those of you who twitter know that i’ve colored my hair again! i whined about my lack of funds last month, which was the reason behind my very lackluster hair. i’m still really broke, but after over 2 months of not cutting it, i really just couldn’t take it anymore.

i called ayumi, my stylist, up last thursday morning (on the 7th), and she told me she would cut and color my hair after she finished coloring pat’s. so i made my way down to the salon that afternoon and sat in that chair for 3 hours getting cut, bleached and colored.

i had torn out a page from a magazine of a hairstyle that i really liked. it was kind of mushroom-shaped, asymmetric, and erm, you know, pretty cool. i really liked it.

i showed the page to ayumi and we decided to bleach my roots out. however, because i had colored my hair a wine-purple color twice before this, i would probably wreck my hair trying to bleach out all that color in the attempt to get it ash-blond. so ayumi convinced me that it would be pretty cool to just bleach my roots out, blend it into my current hair color, and then to just color the roots. i had never heard of nor seen such a hair style before. roots are usually darker and the rest of the hair is usually lighter, and what she was suggesting was the opposite of that! light roots and darker hair.

but hey, i’m up for anything new. and unlike some girls who panic and go berserk when hair mishaps happen, to me, hair is hair, is hair is hair! it’ll grow back and a color job gone wrong can be corrected in two weeks. so i went for it!

i sat through a bleach job that burned a hole in my scalp, and we also added some very bold bleached streaks underneath the top layer of hair. ayumi called me a colored monkey because with the bleached hair and my reddish ends, i really looked like those monkeys from the 2nd picture.

then mid-way through my hair-bleaching process, with my roots turning orange and yellow, and major foil pieces in between, a minor problem happened with some chinese construction workers at pat’s house nearby and i was called to go over and talk to them! (they couldn’t speak a work of english and i was the only one who could communicate in mandarin.) so i walked over wearing nothing but grey polka-dot tights, a black plastic salon robe, and foil in my hair. yep, out of the patricia field shop (the salon is in the basement of the shop) and onto the streets of bowery, trying to look cool.

hahahah it was a little funny!! at least i felt quite ridiculous, but i tried to hurry over looking like i do this ever other day. hee hee hee!

ayumi cut my hair later, and she did it a little differently from the picture. which i really liked when i sat there in the salon chair, but when i went back home later that night i decided i really liked the cut in the picture more. after all, i had actually kept that torn magazine page on my inspiration wall for about a month now!

so i took my hair scissors and snipped the right side of my hair, making my fringe and right side sloped. granted, i’m no hairdresser and i was nervous about cutting off my eyeballs and earlobes, so everything was pretty evenly cut except right at those two areas! (please do not attempt this at home, kids. especially not if you’re the type who bawls with something goes wrong with your hair. and if you do attempt to cut your own hair, make sure you do not sneeze. haha!)

my hair isn’t long enough to look like the picture, but i’m still really pleased with the results. in fact, it’s really the craziest haircut and color job i’ve ever had!!! i really need to take some better photos out under the sun, so that you can see how many colors i have in my hair. it’s quite crazy. i’ve got pink at the roots, then it blends to orange before turning red from my previous dye job, and at some parts it’s purple at the tips.

when i went to work the next day and showed ayumi my self-cut hair, she laughed and said i did a pretty good job considering i didn’t know what i was doing. haha! i’ll probably get her to trim it neat once i get the chance.

remember that sailor’s cap? it was a really cheapo $13 cap that i bought from a halloween store last month for sushi’s birthday party, that was nautical themed. i fell in love with it but it was really badly made. i mean, what can you expect for something that costs less than a meal in new york city? it even had one of those super ugly plastic things at the back, that you find at the back of caps. i don’t know what they’re called, but they’re like the cap version of velcro, meant to adjust the size of caps. it made the whole thing look so darn cheap.

so i took some milliner’s tape and covered that ugly thing up, then sewed some sequin fabric (left over from my sequined hammer pants) onto the brim of the hat, that was originally just black plastic.

in an instant, that cap just looked a ton better! magic! i love it so much i’ve been bringing the cap everywhere with me.

note to self: stop making stupid faces!

it’s not a great picture, and i wish there was more light so you can see how the sequins reflect, but it’s pretty amazing. the next time i feel a little crafty, i’ll go over the crest patch and sew black and gold beads over it.

anyway, sorry for the lack of updates. i’m actually in boston right now, visiting my darling friend alex whom i’ve known since i was like, 8 or something. actually we’re so comfortable with each other sometimes it’s like we’re just brother and sister. nah, more like some really jaded couple that’s been married for 50 years. haha! this is my last chance to really relax. once i get back to new york, it’s more work at patricia field‘s, then a few days of trade shows with femme sud, then a frantic rush to finish my summer homework which i haven’t touched at all, and on september 2nd, school starts!

i can’t believe it! my whole summer, gone! over! i’m so dreading going back to the robotic life of a fashion student at parsons. i love designing and get inspired all the time, but parsons seriously sucks and i hate that the school often makes me hate fashion!!

i came across this interview of pat field for good morning america on abc news. it was so great, i had to share it. click*click to watch it!

i do remember growing up and discovering myself. i remember trying on all sorts of different fashions and styles, and thinking i was the hottest thing on the planet. but now when i look back at old pictures i want to burn them. (hey, not all of them, aight?? some were really pretty hawt. ahaha!!)

as i grew older, i learned more about myself and who i really was, and that definitely helped define how i dress and present myself to the world. i wish i could show you my closet (but i can’t because i need someone to organize it in a martha-stewart-organized kind of way), but if you know me, you’ll know that i have so many different outfits that i can throw together to suit how i’m feeling that day. i don’t have a definitive “look” per-say.

in the video, they talk about how pat field’s logo is her flaming red hair. and it made me think for a while about what my logo was. in fact i thought for a really long time, and then i realized i didn’t actually have one.

i panicked for a split second, and was thinking about this while walking over to union square to meet this japanese girl for dinner. she is here in new york on holiday, and she has been a reader of my japanese blog for quite some time and wanted to meet up.

then she told me something that made me realize, that not having a specific logo isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

she said that she was nervous because she didn’t know if she might recognize me, since she knew i had just changed my hair color (for maybe the 47th time). so she stared hard at every asian that was there, but she knew that none of them were me because i dressed differently. “there is something quirky about the way you wear your clothes,” she said.

i like that. i really do. i like that someone out there knows that what i wear really represents who i am. i like that my clothes tell my story.

i talked about finding a trademark, something that is signature “you”, in an article from last year, called 10 ways to finding a style that’s “you”. do you have a logo? something specific that tells people who you are?

perhaps as i get older and hopefully wiser, my style will become even more definitive than it is now, and then perhaps i really would find a logo of my own. maybe i’ll stick to one hair color. maybe i’ll wear my skull ring forever. maybe i’ll only wear polka-dots like yayoi kusama (she’s such a genius). maybe i’ll grow a mole ala cindy crawford. or that mole(!!) in austen powers. (sorry, i had to say it.)

ugh, i’m sorry the pictures are so blur and grainy ok… i have no money to buy myself a spiffy camera yet. this was like the only winter-ish day in new york. i was in soho and it started snowing all of a sudden. seriously, it was howwwwling. after a few seconds my entire coat was covered in snow flakes!

new hair!! (then) now it’s old. i got it cut when i was in japan in january, by my super darling, manabu. he’s the hair whiz whom i entrusted my hair with for 3 years while i was living in japan. he’s more important than a boyfriend. no, really!! i need him so bad. my hair is now flat and not very cool at all. in fact, i sent him a postcard that said something like this:

what i have done, is colored my hair black! woohoo!

my hair had been pink and purple for some time now, and for over a month, the color was still extremely neon and vibrant. but around the start of the november, the color started fading and it wasn’t as bright and vivid as i wanted it to be.

well, i also got slightly sick of it. you know me, i can’t keep one look for too long. i needed change.

so change i did.

bye bye miss faded and jaded, hello miss rock-star black!

i did it myself in my bathroom. it was horrific. i haven’t colored my own hair for a long time now, especially black! so when i was done with the color, my entire neck was a disgusting muddy black color. not to mention my ears and even shoulders, even though i had rubbed in a huge amount of vaseline to protect my skin! i freaked out! for a moment, i thought i’d have to wear a knit cap and scarf until the color faded. i spent like an hour in the shower rubbing the hell out of it.

and after all the rubbing and scrubbing, my skin was no longer black. yay!

but it was red. boo.

anyway the last couple of weeks have just been crazy. i decided to drop out of one class because i just couldn’t cope. it was too much and it’s just not worth killing myself over school. this means that i might have to take it in senior year (when i really want to be concentrating on my final collection and not taking other unnecessary things), but ahh, heck. i just can’t do it now.

on the up side, i’m finally getting the hang of what my fashion concepts (where we basically draw and design clothes) teacher wants out of me. she’s really nice and funny but honestly, she’s crazy and has been loading us with so much work, all of us are stressed, exhausted and basically dying. we get so much more work than the other classes!! it’s crazy! and she hates everything i do because it’s apparently too costumey and over-the-top.

well i love over-the-top and i refuse to let new york jade me.

another teacher of mine, for my studio methods class (where we do sewing and all that), is like the cutest funniest person ever. i love greg. he’s so damn smart and cute and so darn funny i wanna pinch his cheeks. hahaha. get this: he’s 28 and has worked for people like karl lagerfeld before!! and, get get this this: i don’t know what his exact position is, but he’s either head pattern maker, or one of the pattern makers, of the victoria’s secret fashion show!!!

yeah, you know what i’m talking about. i’m not talking about the stuff they sell in the stores. hell no. i’m talking about the famous victoria’s secret runway show. some of their most famous models include heidi klum, naomi campbell, tyra banks, gisele bundchen, alessandra ambrosio and so on. they are the women whom men wanna lick and women wanna be.

and greg is one of their pattern makers. WOW.

he told us that when we first started the semester, and all of us just went wowowowow and that was it. but then the “wow-ness” of it all finally rubbed in last week when he told us, “i won’t be here for class next week because i’ll be in l.a. for the victoria’s secret show.”

holy crap.

how exciting is that?? he says that heidi, gisele and (i think he mentioned) karolina, are the most-est nicest people ever and he loves them to death. ooh ahh. i hope he comes back on monday with juicy gossip to feed my inner paparazzi.

greg also has his own menswear line that is really classy. he always wears his own shirts and i really like them because he pays attention to the smallest detail. and it’s called godspeed the well-dressed man. how can you not love him.

wait, back to the victoria’s secrets show… i wonder…. doing what he does, does that mean that he gets to touch their boobs and knows all their real measurements? wahahaha. i’m dying to find out.
