on saturday, i went along with the house of field to the latex ball. i was quite looking forward to this, especially because i’d missed out on “the greatest ball on earth” last year and really wanted to go ever since i saw how much everyone dressed up for it last summer.

what is a “ball”? it’s hard to explain… the balls that i’m talking about aren’t your regular cinderelli-cinderelli kind of balls where everyone dresses in ballgowns with crinolines and coat tails.

here’s a little expansion to your vocabulary for you… gay-cabulary that i never knew existed until i started interning at patricia field‘s last summer. ps: all you gay-haters, make love not hate.

anyway, a ball is an event where houses compete against each other in many different categories echoing anything from high fashion to a way of being. there is a catwalk with judges, and houses send representatives to walk and compete with other houses for a prize. this year’s ball was themed “vegas”, and there were tons of categories. some were interesting, some were kind of odd. if you are the best dressed with the most amazing attitude (ya gotta be fierrrce!) in your category, you could win money and fame within the ball circuit!

anyone can take part, you just have to belong to a house, have tons of confidence, the right outfit for your look, and bring it! whoever comes up to walk gets to stay if the judges say so, or they immediately get cut. those who stay, walk and compete with someone else from a different house until the final winner is decided on.

so what are these “houses”? you’ve heard me mentioning “house of field” a gabizillion times on this blog, i’m sure. from what i understand, houses are basically like a second family. or one’s only family, especially if they experience any sort of rejection from their own family and the people around them. it could be because they were rejected for being gay or lesbian. in any case, a house is lead by a “father” and/or “mother”, who either use their real last names or come up with something fancy. their house is then called that name too, and they have “children”.

in my case, i found my way into the house of field (or at least i think i’m in it. haha!) through working at the store. many in the house of field are from the good old studio 54 scene, and the rest are still some of the most colourful downtown characters i’ve ever met. not everyone there is gay, although most are. but we still get along really well with each other and some of them have really been friends for years.

so anyway, although i really wanted to go to the ball, i refuuuuused to walk. because look, i do love to dress up, but my idea of dress up is not exactly considered amazing here. plus,  i feel fat. it really shouldn’t have mattered, but: i have a lot of confidence in my capabilities, but i have the confidence of an over-fried peanut when it comes to how i look. so there was no way i was going to go up to compete against these fabulous queens!

i was pretty broke and couldn’t not spend any money on buying an outfit. and it was a really, REALLY hot and humid day, so i needed to be comfortable or i would slit my wrists. after emptying out my closet and getting really pissed off that i had nothing fancy and really crazy that felt right, i went back to my sequined harem pants to save the day!

oh-kay, oh-kay, i hear you. i made most of what i wore and could have just written “DIY” instead. but for 5 seconds i want to put my label to everything, aight?? haha!

anyway, when we got the the ball, it was packed with a capital P-A-C-K-E-D. we had a table but it was right next to the stage where everyone else was crowding around, so there was no where to sit and no air to breathe!

it was hot!!! hooot in a non-funny way!!! if i did not have my little foldable fan in my purse ala monsieur lagerfeld, i would have died! what were the organizers thinking?? they sold way too many tickets and did not turn on that damned airconditioner!!

early on in the ball, they called pat onstage and introduced her as the legendary stylist for sex and the city, etc, and she had the mike for a bit and it was all fun and nice. then she went backstage to get changed and walked the “best dressed spectator (at the casino)” category. i think she looked amazing. all white with sunglasses and that headgear and a camera?! i loved it! it was so stereotypically vegas tourist! she got through the initial rounds then lost to this queen called eve, who was dressed in a serious gown and headpiece. she looked good, no doubt, but anyone could have come up with that!

it was my first ball and for the first couple of hours, it was all really interesting and fun. the “city lights, old way vs new way” category was quite amazing. a couple of fathers from some houses were competing in their neons. and when i say these boys can dance, i mean they can dance!

remember madonna’s song, vogue? remember it’s dance steps and how her hands just danced all over in angular and linear shapes around her face? vogue-ing is a huge dance form in the gay scene, and these people have no bones in their arms and 40 double-joints in their shoulders!! i’ve seen it on tv and seen a couple of my friends do some serious vogue-ing before, but this was a competition and it was fierce! i cringed a couple of times. how can they do that without popping their shoulders?! eeks!

these two dance-offs were probably my favourites, especially because they didn’t just dance alone, but vogued all over their opponents as well. it was pretty darn fantastic to watch.

neon is an amazing headdress designer with his own line called triviál, and comes up with the most incredible and original avant garde hat porn. a few months ago beyonce came to the boutique and saw one of his pieces in the glass display and promptly bought it! he took part in this futuristic “vegas 3121″ category.

verushka was all dressed up… or not, for “moulin rouge”, and i’ll have you know that she looked amazing!!! she had on a top hat and this huge feather fan, and walked and danced down the runway! but i swear the judges were being biased and racist on her! she got through the initial cut, then when she walked against this other girl who was in some corset and little top hat and didn’t even do a fierce walk and was a total yawn, the judges all picked the other girl!

it was a 2046% racist situation! they weren’t going to pick her if she wasn’t black!! i swear! watch these 2 videos yourself and tell me you didn’t think it was unfair!

the star of the night was this little girl who was probably the only kid who took part. she wasn’t in any particularly stunning costume, but she had some major attitude. it was so great for this particular competition because she made a huge show of looking at the other walkers and yawning at them which was hilarious. but at the same time, i was wondering why this kid was here at this place full of almost naked people at 2am in the morning. she was really fierce on stage and the crowd loved her, but i’m hoping she isn’t like that off the stage as well or she needs a little smack for real. haha!

naoko, moto and ayami all dressed up for “the milionaire’s mistress” and “pussycat dolls” categories, but they completely missed it, which was a shame because they looked amazing!!

i completely blame the forgot-to-turn-on-the-airconditioner organizers. it was such a huge mess and each category took forever to finish and half-way through each one, no one remembered anymore what it was. plus, it was fucking steaming in that ballroom and that was not cute. everyone was fanning themselves with any piece of paper or flyer they could find. it’s like 3000 people were standing for hours in a really overcrowded space!!

pat left at about 1 or 2am, and slowly each of us from the house of field picked up our things and left too. there were still dance competitions going on, and while they were all really talented dancers, after seeing the same thing for 5 hours, the novelty feeling sort of wears itself off. it was fun for a while but geez it was too much of a torture to stand in a sauna with too-loud speakers for all those hours!

the asian group somehow stayed the longest. haha! i was glad to get out of the ball. thank god it was a little breezy outside!! nao-chan’s hubby was hungry and i was equally famished, so we headed to cafeteria in chelsea for some 4am supper. (by the way everyone needs to have the mussels there! oh!em!gee! so damn good!)

i got home at about 5 and took my 3rd icy-cold shower of the day. if i forget to apply moisturizer one more time before sleeping in my dry, airconditioned room, my skin’s gonna crack into 2 big pieces of snake leather.

oh, did i forget to say, that i tried on the wig before i left my house, but the wig and cape came off within minutes of stepping into the ballroom? thank god i didn’t wear any tights or anything figure-hugging, that might have killed me in the stuffy ball, or i would have seriously given up and gone home immediately.

so this was me at the end of the night. seriously tired, no cape, and no damn wig. (how do the queens do it?? how do they wear their wigs in all the heat??)

today, august 9th, is singapore‘s birthday. it’s a little weird, but “absence makes the heart grow fonder”, and “home sweet home” really does make some sense, no matter how silly that sounds. i’ve been away from home for 6 years now. just counting those number of years kind of shocked me.

i do miss home, my family, dog and friends. and i guess i appreciate them all the more, especially after moving away and realizing how awful it is to be living abroad on one’s own. there are so many things i hate about singapore, like the constant heat. but as long as i have family and friends there, i guess singapore will still always be home. i really wanted to go back for a couple of weeks this summer, but work wouldn’t allow that to happen. happy birthday singapore. i can’t wait to go back to see everyone, and to eat chicken rice, prata, chwee kueh, carrot cake, pepper crab, and to drink 4 tons of milo dinos. yummmmmm.

i found this picture of the merlion on sentosa, in my pictures folder from 2003, on one of those weird family outings that my dad makes us go on once in a while. it was taken a few months before i moved away to tokyo; quite a distant memory, but i’m glad i took about a million photos that day to remember it by.

i help out once in a while when they do shoots for the online store. yes there is some real work involved, but damn everyone’s so cute and fun, and absolutely hilarious at times. this was us fooling around while waiting for the model to change.

some of us bloggers met up for brunch in chelsea, for beka of relyme’s birthday and going-away party. i wish i’d had the chance to hang out with her more often while she was here! we lived just a block away from each other! fail!! in the picture is also felicia, and anna of iwanttowearit. also there was sarah of styleit fame; too bad i didn’t take more pictures! i love these ladies. they are all so nice and funny, and down-to-earth. not all bloggers are like that, and that’s a fact.

i’ve been experimenting with oils again. i took a really amateur oil painting class about 2 years ago before i moved to america, but it was all monochromatic and simple. i had the urge to do a big painting to hang in the hallway right when you enter through the front door, to cover up this really ugly electrical box cover. so what better thing to paint than the japanese maneki-neko, or beckoning cat, which is supposed to welcome people in, right? it means different things when the cat has its right or left hand up in the beckoning pose. right-hand up is for stores and placed at the entrance or next to the cash register, to “welcome” money. and left-hand up is for welcoming more people in, which i thought would sort of be cool for a home.

of course, my cat's paws sort of became a little peace sign. but so what, right?

i have to say though, i know nothing about oil painting, and when i went to the art store to buy paints and stuff, it was mind boggling and i was overwhelmed. there was linseed oil to buy to mix with the paints, turpentine, blah blah blah, i don’t even know what everything else is called. just the oils alone had like 100 different versions that just left me with a frown on my face!

obviously, it’s not even half-way done, and will be put aside for a while until i finish my bloody homework for school. but i hope to finish it soon, even though it will be painted with all sorts of ghetto methods and probably dry with all sorts of cracks. haha!

the growing wall

you guys have seen my wall before when i was just starting to build it. it started with wrapping tons of lace around the seriously ugly pendant light that came with the apartment. then there were a couple of simple artwork that went onto the wall. i’ve been slowly building it, adding pictures, artwork and my hats to the wall in some sort of random way. i love it. i sleep right below it and look at the wall every night.

my one wish is to paint the walls of my room, but i’ve got too much shit in it now to cover and move out of the room, so that’s definitely not gonna be happening!

i’m such a busybody, i love seeing what people do to their bedrooms. don’t you? i have friends who have brick walls and fireplaces that i’m willing to murder for. of course i’m also addicted to hgtv (a channel about everything in the home) and i really want david bromstad to come to my ugly and tiny apartment. do you decorate? did you paint your own rooms? what do you have on your walls? i need to know so i can steal some ideas! haha.

i also recently did a guest blog post on 39thandbroadway, on fashion school in focus, parsons!! i’ve had so many emails from high school students asking about fashion school and parsons, so i thought it would be a good idea to share a little of my story with 39thandbroadway, a blog with all sorts of industry news from right here in new york!

it was july 4th yesterday!! ok, you knew that. but in america, it’s apparently a really important day to have barbecues and look at fireworks. ummm. right.

last year, i spent my american independance day at patricia field’s annual barbecue. i was still considerably new at work, but it was quite the beginning of a love affair because i’d fallen in love with all these amazing people from the house of field. i stopped work in december 2008 because of school, after spending about 7 months working in the store (mostly in the office), but i had kept in contact with all my friends there. so when sushi emailed me that he was celebrating his birthday early this year, at pat’s barbecue, there was nowhere else in new york i’d rather be. (ps: i adooore sushi. and his birthday last year was pretty darn fun too!)

the night before, i took a look at my kidrobot plush smorkin’ labbit that was sitting happy on my couch smoking his cig. and instead of a rabbit, suddenly i saw a bag. so i did it. i killed mr labbit!

as the party dwindled down and got more personable and friendly, fay came and said hi to everyone. she’s an ex-classmate of mine from parsons. you might remember her modeling my forest nymph jacket before. she used to work at pat field too, so she knew most of the people there. she said she had a few other parties to go to, so we left pat’s and hopped over to this apparent party at the penthouse of thompson hotel at allen street. unfortunately, the view was amazing but the party was pathetic and filled with drunk teens so we left. fay’s friend, barry, met us at the hotel and we cabbed to brooklyn!

note to self: the next time you wanna go out to a party with colourful people like at pat’s, wear more make up so you won’t look so washed out in comparison. AND, the next time you wanna go out with an ex-model/fabulous designer who you know is gonna wear platform wedges, put your heels on too!

and then i want to point out to everyone, that i was the first person i know in new york to start wearing sailor caps. i started wearing it way long ago and my sailor cap made it’s first pictorial debut at sushi’s birthday last year. but it’s been worn to go to the supermarket, to go to school, everywhere. then all of a sudden, last night, we saw like 10 people all in american apparel but wearing sailor caps. wtf. dress up a little more if you wanna rock the captain’s hat will you!?!? and stop wearing generic sailor caps bought from your local costume shop! the only people fit for the captain now, are hugh hefner, and artie (who’s always a sailor).

on december 21st, the house of field celebrated its annual christmas dinner and i was so delighted to be included. there were over 80 people on this incredible guest list, filled with the most beautiful trannies, drag queens, new york club kids, and really the nicest and funniest people ever. everyone was so shiny and sequined and eyelined, and i think the amount of fake eyelashes used that night could make a wig.

although i recognized many faces, i didn’t know many of them; after all i’d only been working at the patricia field boutique once or twice a week for about 7 months, so i only knew those who came to the store regularly. but it was great to see how everyone was so close to one another. it really felt like christmas, and it didn’t even matter what age, colour, or sex you were.

the party was held in a private room at the la bottega restaurant in the maritime hotel, complete with a fireplace, christmas tree with presents, and of course, who else but trannyclaus! haha!

it was fantastic. everyone was so dressed up it was better than the oscars. i felt so pale in comparison and wished i had piled on the eyeshadow. there’s nothing like feeling less of a female when standing in between two drags. the dinner was so darn yummy, it was quite orgasmic. midway through the evening, the delightful and always smiling andre j performed a little number for us that ended with her spinning in crazy, wild circles around the room, stripping down to little white boy shorts, grabbing a candle from the table and pouring the hot wax all over her body. ooh lala.

then the best thing of all happened.

i honestly thought i might die laughing. tom tom, the boy who had just made some lurve to trannyclaus’s boobies, is of course, gay himself. and i’m sure he isn’t at all particularly attracted to boobs. heh heh.

you know, i never grew up with a thanksgiving holiday, so in 2007 when i experienced my first thanksgiving break, well, i spent it in bed. (i take sleeping very seriously.) i mean, i appreciate my life and thanked god for everything i had, but yeah, that was about it! a few friends invited me to their houses but they were all pretty far and i didn’t actually want to spend like a hundred bucks to impose on huge families whom i didn’t know.

so last thanksgiving, while interning at patricia field, they invited me to have thanksgiving dinner with them at gordon ramsay’s maze restaurant at the london. (the london in new york. just don’t get it.) it kind of made sense – none of us were from new york, we were all far away from home and didn’t have families here to celebrate the day with. so we celebrated it together.

after dinner, sushi, artie, tobell, moto and i went for drinks at a pretty bar where sushi tried to make me chat up some asian dude. he insisted that if i didn’t come back in 5 minutes with a number, that i was fired. and he was quite serious about it. i refused and wanted to report him to the union. except that i’m not in any unions and do they even have one for interns?

the next day was black friday and tobell performed a little number at the store. it was so cool! i love her. although i pitied the poor, cute little japanese customer who was used a target for her song!

and yes the retard who keeps laughing is me.

then ian and omar did an impromptu dance when beyonce’s “single ladies” came up on the radio. they’re so amazing!!! omar was drunk. and ian probably watched her original video 2 million times, but still, i can’t dance like that to save my life!

don’t you just wish you had talent to be as fluid as the two of them? i have like, 3 dance moves! hahahahaha!

and there’s no wifi down in this shithole so i haven’t been able to blog.

well at least i’m trying to come up with an original (albeit lame) excuse! quite a number of you have emailed me and i’m so thankful that you still remember who i am in this whirlwind of 72937904 new fashion blogs that come up everyday. thank you so much. and i know, i know, i’m the snobby devil who didn’t reply and you all have the right to bitch-slap me. actually i have hundreds of emails in my inbox and i just don’t know where to start.

you know what i think? i think i’m letting school get to me. i really am. this stupid piece of $#!*@)#$&! (grrrrr) school is just getting to me. new york is jading me and parsons is the jader.

or maybe i’m having some sort of quarter-life crisis. you know, from this year onwards i’m going to be in my late-twenties. last year, i could still say i’m in my early or mid-twenties… but at 26, i feel like i’m getting old and i’m really not ready for this. there’s so much i want to do and with school, i just don’t have time to do anything i want. so it makes me very frustrated and being frustrated makes me tired and hence i feel like i’m getting old. on the other hand i think i’m still a kid at heart. i’m still young like that. or ok, i just dress young. then again, i seem to “dress young” because i think people in america dress old.

sorry, didn’t mean to insult. but i like colour and i like to have fun and everyone here is just black and grey and meh.

so. what have you guys been up to? i’ve been trying to catch up with all my favourite blogs through my reader. everyone seems to be moving at some speed of light and i feel a little left behind with my boring old life.

the reason why i decided to drop all my work for a little while and blog tonight, (ps: it’s about 2am) is because i just attended the independent fashion bloggers event organised by the lovely jennine of the coveted, and talking to all these bloggers made me realise how much i actually miss blogging.

but the fact of the matter is, i’ve really been so busy with school that i just, simply don’t have anything to blog about unless you want to hear me bitch about school nonstop. (which by the way, for that, you can check out newschoolinexile.com where we are trying to get rid of/impeach the university’s stupid president. yes, for real.) last year was awful and i fell sick so many times. the moment school ended, i also finished my internship with patricia field and left new york on christmas eve.

i flew to tokyo where i met up with my family. they had flewn up from singapore, and it was the first time in like, 7 or 8 years that all 5 of us had gone for a holiday together. we spent most of the 2 weeks in hokkaido (northern super-cold japan – think snow storms), and the remainder in tokyo.

then we flew back home to singapore where i spent the remainder of my winter holidays, before coming back to new york and starting school immediately. and then you know, it all went downhill again from there. until valentine’s day when i went to the party at the patricia field boutique, i hadn’t gone out since returning to new york. i had only been going to school or to the supermarket. which is basically what my life is about, ever since i came to new york about a year and a half ago.

pathetic, don’t you think? i really don’t have a life at all. someone asked me yesterday if i went out on a date for valentine’s day.

oh wait, i think it was my dad when he called me. haha. yeah, he asked if i went on a date, and i said, “date? what date. oh please. i’d rather date my bed.”

school simply takes up every minute of my time, which means really little sleep, if any at all. every minute of free time i have, i’d rather be sleeping or lying horizontally on my couch. (i guess that’s the same thing in two different venues.)

so anyway, the patricia field boutique had a valentine’s day party where the turn-out was super crazy. i have never seen it so packed, there was a line outside!

then on sunday the 15th, i went to amalia in midtown to celebrate pat’s birthday. it was so fun and my friend dai (who works at pat field too), performed her new single “i’m a killa”. she was so amazing!!! i thought it was such a waste that i was at such an amazing party like that because i didn’t know all the celebrities who were there. there were quite a bunch of photogs and every once in a while when certain somebodies walk in, the flashes go off and it’s crazy. i think the cast of ugly betty was there, some actresses and actors… the only one i really recognized was lucy liu. ohhh and fern mallis was there too! i wanted to ambush her but of course i didn’t.

and today, the 16th, i headed downtown, very downtown, to meet fashion bloggers where i was reminded again that my parents never taught me social skills and i blame them entirely for it. haha! i mean, i just don’t know how to go up to people and butt in and say hi! the best i did was to smile around and if anyone smiled back then i was like, “ooh make friends make friends!”

so that, ladies and genteelmen, is the story of my sad life.

and i know you didn’t want to read all that. you just want pictures! right?? i’m gonna upload them, yes i am. cross my heart and hope to die.

wow. as you can see, the only times i get to have fun is when i run away from new york or when i hang out at pat field (which was partly work-related too)!

i really really need to put work aside sometimes and go out and find myself a social life.

i’m not sure how to do this – what’s the best way for me to upload all these photos? do i start from the beginning? or do i go backwards!?

i guess i’ll do a “series” of photos and start from that thanksgiving date eh?

ps: i was just trying to think of a funny name for this series of photos, and all i could think of was “gilda day-dreamer and the prisoner of parsons”. you know, like harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban.

pps: i try to be funny sometimes but i really am not.
